At what gestational age can NIPS testing be conducted?

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPS) can be carried out effectively between 10 to 13 weeks of gestation. During this period, adequate fetal DNA can be detected in the maternal blood, which is essential for NIPS to yield reliable results. Testing conducted prior to 10 weeks may not provide sufficient fetal DNA, leading to inconclusive or inaccurate results. Therefore, the window of 10 to 13 weeks is optimal for clinicians to identify chromosomal abnormalities using this method. Conducting NIPS after the first trimester (14 weeks and beyond) remains possible but generally is not the preferred or most effective timeframe for initial screening purposes, as the earlier gestational testing can indicate risks sooner in the pregnancy.
